Every year, tens of thousands of vehicles are stolen in France, much to the dismay of their owners. In fact, in 2019, the Ministry of the Interior estimated the number of thefts at 140,200, or an average of one theft every 4 minutes…

As every year, the magazine Auto Plus has drawn up its Top 10 of the most stolen cars in France.

Thus, in 2018, the Renault Clio IV succeeded the Smart ForTwo, which had been at the top of the ranking for several years. Both the best-selling and the most stolen car, its weak point is its hands-free card starting system, which is easy to hack. However, there has been a 13% decrease in its theft frequency compared to 2017. The Renault Megane IV, on the other hand, suffers from the same weak point in terms of starting but has seen a 68% increase in its theft frequency. The BMW X6, for its part, jumps 2 places in the ranking, while the Smart ForTwo willingly gives up its first place to the Clio IV to end up in 3rd place.

The complete Top 10:

  1. Renault Clio IV
  2. BMW X6
  3. Smart Fortwo
  4. Land Rover Range Rover / Range Rover Sport
  5. BMW Série 6
  6. Renault Mégane IV
  7. DS 3/DS 3 Cabrio
  8. Renault Twingo I
  9. Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
  10. BMW X5

That being said, cars are not the only ones being stolen from their owners… Motorcycles, scooters, and other two-wheelers still represent nearly 10% of vehicle thefts, or an average of 1 motorcycle stolen every 10 minutes!

In turn, the most stolen motorcycles and scooters in France in 2018 are similar to those of previous years. Yamaha’s Maxi Scooter Tmax still occupies the first place, despite the brand’s efforts to integrate options limiting the risk of theft (presence of an onboard tracker on some series, central stand locking, etc.). The brand’s 125 scooters are also highly coveted. The Italian manufacturer Piaggio is also not to be outdone, with 3 models in 4th, 8th and 9th positions.

The Top 10 most stolen motorized two-wheelers in France, established by la Mutuelle des Motards:

  1. Yamaha Tmax 530 and 500
  2. BMW R 1200 GS
  3. Yamaha 125 Xmax
  4. Piaggio 125 Vespa
  5. Honda 125 PCX
  6. Triumph Street Triple 675
  7. Yamaha MT-07
  8. Piaggio 500 MP3
  9. Piaggio 300 MP3
  10. Triumph 1050 Speed Triple

Note that in more than 80% of cases, the stolen vehicles mentioned were protected by an anti-theft device according to a survey by the I.C.A club (protection of two-wheelers and drivers) relayed by Le Figaro.
