Invoxia is relaunching its major national study on theft risks in 2026, with a 5-minute open questionnaire for everyone, to provide an updated overview of car, motorcycle, and bicycle theft in France — and to better understand what really protects, or doesn’t protect, owners.
Why Relaunch This Study in 2026 #
In 2024, Invoxia launched its first study on theft risks in different modes of transport, with no less than 7,325 respondents. The findings were twofold: official figures showed a continuous increase in vehicle thefts, yet very little data existed on the feelings of potential victims — their real level of concern, the protective measures they use (or don’t use), and what would truly reassure them.
Two years later, the picture has changed: the latest figures show a decline in the number of car and motorized two-wheeler thefts, after several years of increase. Does this decline translate into a regained sense of security among owners? Or is the risk still perceived as high as before, regardless of official statistics? This is precisely what this new edition of the study aims to measure.
Vehicle Theft in France: What the Latest Figures Say #
Cars: A 9% Decrease, but Still Over 64,000 Vehicles Stolen in 2025 #
According to the Argos 2025 ranking published by France Assureurs, 64,088 cars were stolen in France in 2025, compared to 70,459 in 2024 — a 9% decrease, a first after several years of continuous increase. The data, covering 99% of the car insurance market, also shows a strong geographical concentration: more than half of the thefts are concentrated in 14 departments, led by Bouches-du-Rhône (4,289 thefts, 20% of the total), Nord, and Rhône. In terms of models, the Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson are the most targeted vehicles. Relatively good news: 40% of stolen cars are recovered, two-thirds of them within a month of the theft.
Motorcycles and Scooters: One Theft Every 10 Minutes According to Estimates #
The number of officially declared stolen motorized two-wheelers remains below the reality on the ground: the Mutuelle des Motards records about 16,000 declarations in 2025, while Argos estimates the real number of thefts at around 60,000 motorcycles and scooters per year — roughly one theft every 10 minutes. More than half of these thefts are concentrated in Île-de-France, PACA, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and nearly one in two thefts occurs in places considered safe: residential parking lots, closed courtyards, private garages.
Bicycles: Over 800,000 Thefts or Attempts Each Year #
The bicycle remains by far the most affected mode of transport in terms of volume: according to the survey “Experience and Perception of Security” by the Ministry of the Interior (results published in November 2024, data from 2022), 1.66% of people aged 18 and over surveyed reported that their household had been a victim of a bicycle theft or attempted theft — approximately 815,000 estimated thefts and attempts that year nationwide. A separate figure, on a different scope (bicycles registered in the national cycle identification file, not all thefts): the recovery rate is improving, rising from 7.5% in 2022 to 11.4% in 2024 according to a response from the Ministry of Transport to the National Assembly.

What the Study Will Seek to Measure #
As with the first edition, the questionnaire covers five main areas: the perceived level of risk according to the mode of transport, the experience already lived (or not) of a theft, the protective measures currently used, their perceived effectiveness, and what would most reassure owners in the face of this risk. This 2026 edition pays particular attention to a point that official figures cannot capture: whether the overall decline in car and motorcycle thefts in 2025 has changed the perception of risk, or if the concern remains the same despite a more favorable statistical trend.
In the meantime, a few simple reflexes remain valid regardless of your vehicle: never leave spare keys or remote control badges visible, prefer parking in a well-lit and frequented place, and for two-wheelers, avoid “apparently safe” areas like courtyards and residential parking lots, which account for nearly half of motorcycle thefts.
